Over the last couple of years, a series of non-intrusive surveys has taken place at the two sites, generously grant-funded by the Castle Studies Trust. Nested methodology has been used, involving aerial drone (UAV) technology for extensive topographic survey, together with focused conventional analytical earthwork examination and detailed geophysical study. The underlying principle has been that, by comparing and contrasting the results of the different survey techniques, maximisation of information can be obtained. There's evidence of different trajectories for each castle, showing a short-lived but significant programme of building at Pulverbatch, and an extensive occupation for Caus as the principal residence of the powerful Corbet family, and its associated borough. The contrasting histories, and archaeological evidence, will be explored in the presentation, together with the potential of integrated surveying techniques to further understand the complex narratives at other castle sites in Shropshire and beyond.
Giles Carey is currently Historic Environment Records Officer for Shropshire County Council, where he is responsible for records relating to a wide range of historic buildings and archaeological sites in the county. Archaeological surveying techniques and analysis are his motivator, particularly geophysics, LIDAR and aerial photography, greatly assisting his day job. He has a background in commercial and university academic archaeology and has dug extensively in Scotland, principally on Orkney. He admits to being a bit obsessed with neolithic houses and structures !
