John Hunt is of course the Society's President. This will be the third year in succession that John has led guided visits in the spring to examine selected historic churches of note within the West Midlands region. The first time in 2024 it was to the three churches in the Gnosall group, Staffordshire, then latterly a trip to Berkswell and Ansley in Warwickshire. This year it is to the fine churches at Tong and Claverley, just over the county border in Shropshire.
The first church to be visited is Collegiate St Bartholomew Tong (TF11 8PW, accessible from M54 Junction 3, taking the A41 north) with arrival at 9.45 am for a visit starting at 10.00 am. The significance of this church is explained in the flyer; as is similarly All Saints Claverley (6 Bull Ring, Claverley, WV5 7DT), the second church on the itinerary. Tea, coffee and cake will be on hand when arriving at Tong, with lunch later on following the transfer to Claverley, at the Crown Inn there - it will be a selection of rolls, etc. Tong to Claverley takes about half an hour in the car.
The cost is £17.50 per head with details of how to make payment is below It's as well to book early as the excursion is bound to be popular, as on the previous similar occasions, and places may be limited. Once again a very interesting day in prospect.
To book send a cheque payable to SA&HS to Richard Totty, Rock Cottage, Redhill, Rugeley, WS15 4LL and mention any dietary requirements. Alternatively, if you would like to pay by bank transfer, please contact the SA&HS Hon Treasurer Keith Billington at: kjboutthere@yahoo.co.uk and he will provide the Society's bank account details. In which case, when the automated payment has been made and identified, an email acknowledgement will be issued to you.
