Staffordshire Hoard monograph published

The Society of Antiquaries has published The Staffordshire Hoard: An Anglo-Saxon Treasure.

The monograph is the culmination of ten years of research into the 2009 find, comprising almost 6kg of precious metal objects from the period AD600-AD650 - the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon objects ever found.

 

Around 80% of items are fittings from weapons, most of them from swords. Gold sword pommells are extremely rare, but the Staffordshire Hoard contains 50 such examples.

Lead academic on the project Chris Fern commented that the find completely changes our understanding of Anglo-Saxon armies, showing that gold weaponry was not limited to kings but commonplace in the warrior class.

“What this hoard really shows us for the first time is a golden age in this period of Anglo-Saxon England – and I mean that literally. This was a period when gold was suddenly much more available, and was converted into beautiful objects for the warrior elite.”
